The art programs at Berean serve as vital links within the curriculum throughout all grades. Each class allows students to explore their individual creative talents and to develop their own artistic technique. The rich variety of options and advanced and independent study courses in the arts instill in our students the self-confidence to fully explore their talents.
The Art Department at Berean consists of a series of drawing and painting classes, as well as an entry level sculpture class. Art 1 will expose the student to a wide variety of media with an emphasis on developing drawing skills. Art 2 is an applied 20th Century Art History course. Students study various art movements and then apply the theories they have learned to create actual pieces of art. Advanced Placement Studio Art 1 and 2 is a two year course designed to meet the requirements for submission of a portfolio to the College Board Studio Art Examination. Sculpture is designed to expose the student to 3 dimensional forms and design. The class works with a variety of sculpting media such as paper, found metal, plaster and wood. Student art work is displayed regularly through a variety of venues including community and school exhibits.
The Berean music program teaches an appreciation and understanding of music and valuable performance skills. Our program consists of three choirs, worship band, and two guitar classes. There are over one-hundred and thirty students in the music programs (over one quarter of the student body). We have an advanced choir for mixed voices, composed of sophomores through seniors called the Abundant Life Singers. We have an Advanced Chorale for freshmen through seniors, and a Concert Choir, open to all students, freshmen through seniors. The Abundant Life Singers and Advanced Chorale go on a yearly spring tour. They sing at Rescue Missions, Retirement Centers, schools, and churches throughout California.
Our Drama department consists of Beginning Drama classes where students learn the fundamentals of dramatic history, styles and performance. Our Advanced Drama group is selected through an audition process each spring for the following year. Advanced Drama is a committed group of actors who seek to glorify the Lord through their preparation and presentation of sketches and plays throughout the year. They generally perform the Comedic One Acts in November, a Christmas Show in December, Dramatic One Acts in February and a major play in April. Recent plays include Get Smart, Robin Hood, The Pink Panther, etc.
In addition, the Music and Drama departments join forces to present a full scale Musical every Spring. Shows are truly all-school events with faculty and students "pitching-in" to help with the acting, choreography, dancing, singing, set design and construction, lighting, costumes, and publicity. Recently, we have presented Music Man, Annie Get Yer Gun, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and more.
